Fresh tee! "Ono" by artist John Culqui

In our quest to deliver fresh products and limited edition runs, we teamed up with John Culqui and his simple lines and colorful images. Today, we introduce our first tee designed by him - Ono!

We asked John some questions so you could get to know him a bit better... enjoy!

Ono tee in Heathered Blue

Tell us a bit about yourself, where are you from, how you started painting, why you paint?

I was born in Lennox California, first-generation Ecuadorian American and the youngest of eight children. There isn’t a time growing up and till now that I wasn’t coloring or drawing. I studied Architecture in college and after graduating I took up painting as a form of creative exercise.

Now tell us about surf! For how long, favorite break, how you got into it?
I am really new to surfing, my good friend Mike Schoen got me into it about 9 years ago and I’m still learning. I like going to Gaps in Huntington Beach and El Porto in the South Bay, El Porto takes me back to being a kid so that would have to be my favorite spot.

Can you compare painting to surf?
I would like to think that it is closer to perhaps shaping a board. I would like to think that when a board is shaped the shaper leaves a little bit of their soul and life experience in it and I think my painting is more like that.

Hahah tell us a secret you want no one else to know!
I can’t, the voices in my head are telling me it’s a trap.

Where do you find inspiration for your art?
I find inspiration in the current trends, surf, street, skate, hipster, non-hipster, retro (whatever that is) other artists, architecture, music, friends, and especially my family.

We'll give you a plane ticket anywhere in the world... where you wanna go? (sorry, just hypothetical!)
Aw Rats!  Italy, I love Italy and I would love to take my wife, she’s never been.

Whats your goal with your art?
My goals are pretty simple, create work that I’m proud of and that people enjoy.

What you wanna be when you grow up?
A doctor or in SWAT

The tee is screened at Lanakila Custom Products (in Kalihi). The maroon colorway is 100% cotton and the heathered blue is 50-50 poly-cotton. Both are discharge printed (meaning you can't feel the print - it's not chunky) and a regular fit!
